In a remarkably short time (the winery was founded in 1997), Craggy Range has established a reputation for excellent wines from multiple varieties, thanks in large part to the early decision by founder Terry Peabody and viticulturalist Steve Smith to focus on making single-vineyard wines from different growing regions in New Zealand. Very few other producers can match--or even approach--Craggy Range's ability to excel with Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah and the Bordeaux red blends. Today, Craggy Range owns 85 hectares of vines in the prime Gimblett Gravels section of Hawke's Bay and another 15 hectares of Chardonnay near Elephant Hill along the coast. Craggy Range also owns 95 hectares of vines in their Te Muna Road vineyard in Martinborough and 9 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough.
Winemaker Matt Stafford described 2014 as "a very aromatic vintage here, while 2013 is more about texture."
