Brothers Vincent and Pascal Maurel produced a set of lush, fruit-driven Châteauneuf-du-Papes in 2018, including a couple of the best wines of the vintage. The forward, generous and often flamboyant style here has won them plenty of fans, and these 2018s should make their followers very happy indeed. That said, I found the wines to be quite well-balanced considering their heft, with more than adequate structures to see them enjoy a long aging curves, if perhaps not as extended as the 2016s and 2015s. The Maurels have significant holdings in La Crau, encompassing 44 hectares of mostly old and really, really old vines, with only one hectare planted to white grapes.
