Clos des Brusquières is one of last domaines in the appellation to produce a single wine, and it is consistently a really, really good, old-school rendition of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It’s always vaguely rustic, but in the best way, with lots of garrigue and floral character. This is Wine School 101 Châteauneuf-du-Pape that I would show to someone from Mars who asked me to take themm to the appellation’s leader. The Courtil family, now under the watch of Claude Courtil and his sons, Jérome and David, use a combination of de-stemmed and whole-cluster fruit, depending on the vintage. They raise the wine in a combination of large concrete vats for the Grenache and old, neutral oak casks for the other varieties. The 2018 and 2019 here are a bit more forward than usual, which isn’t a surprise, given the vintages, but I wouldn’t bet against either of them rewarding a good amount of patience.
