Château Fortia is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most fabled domaines. From 1919 until 1967 it was owned and run by Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarie, who established France’s INAO and AOC systems in 1935 and 1936, respectively; these now cover the entire range of food and beverage in France and have since been emulated around the world. The wines are on a steady climb of quality now. In the past I often found a number of the wines excessively funky, but while they usually retain a distinctly old-school, traditional character, they are far more polished than those of a decade ago. These 2016s are definitely the most solid set of wines that I’ve tasted here in some time.
