The large estate owned by the Togni family produces about 800,000 bottles a year (the estate is 60 hectares large; 7 hectares are of red grapes, 24 of Verdicchio and 1.5 of olive trees). The vineyards have been recently replanted and are only 10-15 years old on average, though one vineyard is 43 years old and it is from this site that vines were massally selected and used to plant all the other estate vineyards. Casalfarneto’s approach is different than that employed at other estates of the region: it focuses on making many different Verdicchio wines from the same vineyard, by varying the harvest dates. Therefore, the Fontevecchia Verdicchio wine is made with Verdicchio grapes picked at perfect ripeness, while Grancasale is made with grapes harvested two weeks later, and the Riserva with a blend of grapes harvested at three different points in the season (it also differs because it is partly aged in oak).
