Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, owner of Cantine del Notaio, returned to his family vineyards at Rionero in Vulture in 1998. He arrived with a degree in agricultural science and the desire to recapture the passion of his father and grandfather before him, with faith that Aglianico del Vulture could become important around the world. He brought on Luigi Moio (professor of enology at the University of Naples, owner and winemaker of Quintodecimo in Campania, and renowned Aglianico whisperer) to aid him in clonal selection and experiments in the vineyards, and to oversee all winemaking practices. The results of their work together placed Cantine del Notaio firmly on the map in Vulture. Today, Cantine del Notaio farms 40 hectares spread out across the villages of Rionero, Barile, Ripacandida, Maschito and Ginestra. This gives them access to a diverse selection of terroir from which they build the lineup of big, sturdy yet high-quality Vulture whites and reds. There is a bit of a modern leaning to a number of their wines, yet they are balanced quite nicely against the grippy tannins, earthy nature and formidable dark fruit of Aglianico; La Firma or Il Repertorio, which both spend 12 months in first-pass barriques, hardly show notes of new oak. L’Atto is a mouthful of fresh, ripe and pure Aglianico fruit with rare value. The Aglianico Rosato, Il Rogito, harnesses both the power and the vibrancy of the variety in pink form.
