2019 Chardonnay Somereto

The Andriano winery and vineyards were purchased by Cantina Terlano in 2009, a move that further fortified their already-diverse portfolio of wines. While the terroir which surrounds the Terlano estate is more of a volcanic-originating red porphyry (sandy and lacking is calcium carbonate), the soils surrounding Andriano and within their vineyards are more in line with other producers in the region (rocky and calcareous). In tasting, the wines of Andriano are softer and more pliant versus Terlano’s vertical feel. This also allows them to experiment with the use of Tonneaux in the production of white wines, which further complements the style. All wines are being made in the Terlano cellars and under the supervision of winemaker Rudi Kofler. That said, I didn’t find the same energy and verve throughout the Andriano range of wines when compared to Cantina Terlano. Whether this is due to the difference of terroir, varietal focus, cooperage or growing pains is yet to be seen.
