Franschhoek’s leading producer straddles the commercial and artisanal ends of the spectrum, under the guidance of head winemaker Gottfried Mocke since he took over from founder Mark Kent in 2016. The Chocolate Block continues to serve as a great ambassador for South African wine, even if I find the name now a bit misleading. The two 2018 Cabernet Sauvignons suggest that their winning formula works better at home in Franschhoek than over in Stellenbosch. Don’t overlook their Sémillon, which is always one of my favorite wines from their portfolio and worthy of cellaring.
