Bradley Brown draws across a number of sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Gabilan Mountains to the south for a wide range of wines that encompass Rhône, Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties. A preference for picking on the earlier side yields perfumed, savory wines with a good bit of energy that often need a few years in bottle to be at their very best. Readers will find plenty of delicious, compelling wines here. I did find some of the 2017 Pinots to be more challenging, but that is in keeping with the style of the year more broadly.

I was deeply impressed with the wide range of wines I tasted this year from Big Basin and proprietor Bradley Brown, with perhaps one or two exceptions. Specifically, the wines have attained a level of purity and focus that was not always present in the early days. The whole clusters, which are still a significant part of the house style, are much better integrated into the fabric of the wines than was once the case. As a result, the wines are wonderfully detailed and finely sketched to a degree I have not seen in the past.
