After building a reputation for rich, ripe Chardonnays and dark-fruited Pinot Noirs, Bernardus has been steering toward wines of more delicacy over the last few years. Make no mistake, these are still extroverted wines, but there’s now a somewhat lighter touch on display, especially in 2018. While new oak is definitely in evidence, and sometimes pretty obvious when the wines are young, it’s now more integrated with the fruit, and there’s more energy as well. Fruit for both the single-vineyard designated Pinots and the Chardonnays is sourced from some of the Santa Lucia Highlands’ most sought-after vineyards, and it shows.
