2018 Old Hill Heritage Wine

I tasted a massive number of wines with Morgan Peterson for this report. Thirty five, to be exact. All I missed was the 2017 Montecillo Cabernet, which had not been bottled at the time. Readers will have a very hard time choosing in this range, as so many wines are mind-blowingly profound. Moreover, the wines are so expressive of site. The real essence of these vineyards, among the most historic in the United States, comes through loud and clear. It is an especially strong vintage in the Russian River Valley, as the Limerick Lane, Carlisle, Papera, Dolinsek make abundantly clear. Although Pinot and Chardonnay are far more popular in the Russian River, I often think Zinfandel-based field blends are the real stars of the appellation. In Sonoma Valley, the Monte Rosso, Old Hill, Pagani Ranch and Bedrock are all superb. Prices are incredibly fair, to say the least. Simply put, this is a monumental set of wines from Morgan Peterson and his long-time partner Chris Cottrell.
