“I have never been so near my ideal of cool, salty minerality in Riesling as I was in 2013,” said Hans Oliver Spanier in Hohen-Sulzen at the southern end of Rheinhessen. From the terrace of his home, you can already see the foothills of the Pfalz. Spanier's biodynamic wines, fermented with wild yeasts and matured in cask, now show more balance, finesse and elegance than they did even five years ago. Yes, the dry Rieslings still have enormous depth and structure, but they are not so opulent as they once were and age admirably well.
