Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino's 2004 Barolos are gorgeous. It's great to see the wines show so well, as Azelia is an estate that deserves far greater attention. The 2004s are fresh, vibrant and delicious today, but also have more than enough depth to drink well for years to come. Although often lumped into the modern school, Azelia has found a comfortable stylistic middle ground that results in wines that drink well early but also develop well in bottle. Case in point; in 2004, fermentations lasted 18-25 days and the Barolos were aged in French oak or casks, depending on the specific wine.

Proprietor Luigi Scavino doesn't get anywhere near the attention he deserves, but make no mistake about it, his top Barolos play in the same league as the Piedmont's elite bottlings. The Barolos see malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barriques, although the Margheria is aged in medium-size French oak barrels.
