Brothers Mark and Ben McWilliams are in the middle of transforming Arista into a world-class winery. Things are still a work in progress, but I saw a lot to get excited about during a recent visit. The McWillamses started by buying back the winery from their parents, Al and Janis, who founded the winery in 2002. The brothers then bought a piece of a highly regarded vineyard on Martinelli Road, renamed it Banfield, and consequently sold the vineyard to free up capital while retaining a long-term lease and the right to direct farming. The fresh capital is now being used to build a winemaking facility on the site of the Arista Russian River estate vineyard. In 2013, the McWilliameses recruited winemaker Matt Courtney, who spent eight years at Marcassin and is one of California's rising stars. Through an unexpected set of events, Courtney was shortly thereafter able to put together his former team when he was joined at Arista by his assistant winemaker and cellar master at Marcassin. Vineyard guru Ulises Valdez takes care of the farming. Based on this tasting, my impression is that the Chardonnays are quite polished, but that the team is still honing in on a style for the Pinot Nors. Arista sources Pinot fruit from a number of vineyards in Sonoma, Mendocino and Anderson Valley. I can only wonder if a more streamlined lineup might allow for more focus. In addition to these wines, I also tasted the 2013 Pinot Noir Lucky Well Vineyard, but it was too heavily reduced to recommend. Vinous readers should make sure Arista is on their radar screen.
