On my most recent trip to Alto Adige, I was able to tour the St. Magdalener vineyards with Christian Plattner, owner and winemaker at Ansitz Waldgries. Looking out from the winery, you can see the city of Bolzano, in what appears to be a brisk ten-minute walk away, as well as the three valleys that form a confluence of warm air and ventilation that creates this unique terroir. Even though it’s situated in one of the country's most northern regions, Bolzano is one of the warmest cities in Italy. During the day, the sun bears down, while the cold sweeps in at night as soon as the sun sets. Ansitz Waldgries is located in the area of Alto Adige where they are able to create their zesty and sometimes larger-scaled reds, which Christian Plattner excels at. The specialties of the house are Lagrein and Schiava, located around the estate in Bolzano, as well as Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon, which are planted at higher elevations (around 600 meters). If I had to generalize, the wines of Ansitz Waldgries are racy yet serious and intense, much like their creator. They don’t quite feel like Alto Adige wines to me, but only because they obtain so much richness and body, all while maintaining fantastic balance. What’s more, the important reds age beautifully. However, if you’re in the mood to check out the house style while drinking a more accessible and affordable wine, their St. Magdalener Classico is a great contender.
