Unfortunately I was only able to taste one 2003 Barolo at Oberto, one of La Morra's under-the-radar artisan growers. Fabio Oberto describes 2003 as a year with very high summertime temperatures that exceeded 38-39 degrees Celsius (Fahrenheit) for 40 days with no break and none of the diurnal shifts that Nebbiolo needs for the full development of tannin, color and perfume.

In a region full of outspoken, colorful producers, Fabio Oberto comes across as somewhat shy and introverted. Maybe that's one of the reasons th is estate remains less well-known than it should. Regardless, readers will want to give these wines careful consideration. In most vintages the Barolo Rocche is one of the finest wines from th is vineyard.
