Winemaker Anna Schafer is confident that she “nailed” 2014, and so she thought she’d have a good understanding of 2015. But that vintage turned out to be very different and “extremely challenging.” In fact, she told me, “it was so hot that it ripened white grapes on one side but not the other. We should have picked even earlier, and pressed lighter and longer.” Still, the Boushey Vineyard in Yakima Valley produced very good Viognier in 2015, she added. As of 2013, Schafer has increased her percentage of whole-cluster vinification for Syrah to 60%.
