Katharina Alzinger recalls that 2023 was slow to start, with a three-week delay to vegetation in the spring, initially giving the impression that it would be a later harvest. But an “extremely warm summer” put paid to that. She acknowledges some hail damage at the end of August but notes that they “got away lightly” compared to Kamptal and Kremstal.” They started to harvest in the second half of September when days were still hot, so picking began at first light and finished at 11:30 in the morning so grapes would not arrive at the winery too hot. She notes that they managed to capture alcohol levels of 12.5 and 13.5 in the Federspiels and Smaragds, respectively. She also indicated that they have started using hail nets to mitigate risk. Alzinger said that this was a year that “demanded flexibility” and agility. They mustered both as the wines are as clear-cut as ever. The barrel samples tasted were the final blends.
