“After rigorous selection,” relates Leo Alzinger Junior, “we arrived at about half of a normal crop and half of the normal number of bottlings. Picking began in the first week of October,” he continues, “and involved a lot of gut decisions [Bauchentscheidungen].” I suspect he could have added: “gut-wrenching.” But father and son need not second-guess their decisions, which resulted in a wonderful opportunity to display the virtues of top Wachau terroir in alcoholically diminutive form. As a possible key to vintage quality, Alzinger reports that, at a two-to-one ratio, tartaric acid dominated over malic to the same degree as in 2013, albeit at a total level of acidity surpassing even that of 2010.
