The Adanti family, one of the older and most traditional producers of Sagrantino, is known for a more refined, relatively lighter style of wine. Their wines also happen to age very well: the 1998 is one of the top half dozen sagrantino bottlings of all time, and probably still has another 25 years of life ahead of it. In a quest to further improve their wines, the estate hired star winemaker Maurizio Castelli in 2008. Considering that his Tuscan wines have always epitomized elegance (for example, those of Grattamacco and Badia a Coltibuono), he ought to prove a perfect fit with Adanti. Unlike some other famous winemakers whose signature style ends up clearly dominating the wine's characteristics, Castelli has always let the terroir shine through; and it is an interesting sign of the times in Italian wine that he is now back in demand after a period when other consulting winemakers were all the rage. Also recommended: 2007 Grechetto Colli Martani (86), 2004 Rosso D'Arquata Umbria Rosso (85).
