It’s easy to sympathize with wine lovers who look askance at Petite Sirah given the number of monolithic/one-dimensional, ponderous and pedestrian (or worse) versions that have been produced across California over the decades. But a spin through the consistently outstanding Petite Sirahs and Petite Sirah–based or -dependent wines that Aaron Jackson has been producing, including this year’s lineup, should give anyone a reason to not write off the variety wholesale. Jackson is a native of nearby, coastal Cayucos and earned a degree from Australia’s famed Roseworthy Agricultural College at the University of Adelaide following graduation from Cal Poly, so he knows his way around ripe fruit and what to do with it. As a contrast, Jackson also makes Pinot Noirs and a Viognier from cold sites in San Luis Obispo County, and they are also superb wines. Production here only totals around 1,000 cases, for now, so the best shot at getting your hands on them is contacting Jackson directly or paying a visit to his cozy tasting room and winery in Paso Robles’ bustling Tin City, where he shares a small building with Benom.
