Michael Cruse crafts fun, whimsical wines that capture a decidedly adventurous side of California. Most of the wines are contemporary takes on heritage varieties from top vineyard sites, done with an emphasis on freshness. That’s a very appealing combination in my book. The méthode champenoise selections in this range are a bit more mainstream than the sparkling wines Cruse makes at Ultramarine. Best of all, these wines remain very fairly priced.

Michael Cruse is one of the most thoughtful producers in California. This lineup is full of intriguing wines. The sparkling wines Cruse makes under his own label are interesting but also different from those he crafts at Ultramarine. I find the Cruse sparklers more tense and savory, likely a combination of low dosage and stem inclusion in the Pinot. Among the reds, the Valdiguié is especially delicious this year.
