Heitz is one of the historic names in Napa Valley. The Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has been an iconic wine since 1966. The recent sale of Heitz to Arkansas businessman Gaylon Lawrence was in some ways a surprise, but in retrospect, perhaps it was not so surprising. To be sure, there are fewer and fewer family-owned wineries in Napa Valley that are able to transition from one generation to the next succesfully. On the other hand, Heitz can surely use a boost of new energy. I am hopeful that is exactly what Lawrence will bring to Heitz.
