Christophe Sabon and his sister Isabelle told me that both 2013 and 2012 will provide plenty of early drinking pleasure, and that while they believe that both vintages will age along fairly classisc wines, meaning into their second decade of life, they will likely enter their peak drinking window five or six years after the harvest. As was the case across the region, production was dramatically off in 2013: the Sabons had about 40% less than a normal yield, according to Christophe. The all-Grenache Chaupin bottling was obviously the hardest hit in '13 but most of the old vines that provide fruit for the Châteauneuf Vieilles Vignes are Grenache as well so expect a fairly tough time finding this wine in the marketplace. Isabelle told me that she's quite fond of the '12s here "because they show both richness and elegance and are, in a way, all things to all wine drinkers--those who age our wines and those who drink them right when they get them."
