Larry Turley is one of a handful of winery owners who actually reduced prices on a couple of his '98s, a consumer-friendly strategy that many red wine producers of the North Coast would do well to adopt. Some of his Napa Valley sites struggled to ripen their fruit in '98, but other vineyards farther afield did reasonably well in this late growing season. A couple of Turley zins even surpass their 1997 predecessors (winemaker Ehren Jordan considers many of the wines from this powerful vintage to be a bit exaggerated— "caricatures of zin"). My tasting finished with the winery's new closer: the 1998 Zinfandel Port, an outsized, viscous, explosively fruity wine with 20% alcohol and 10% residual sugar. This "eau de zin," as Turley called it, managed to make the Hayne Zinfandel look like a gentle luncheon wine.
