"1996 was our first vintage since 1985 that brought both quantity and quality," reports Pascal Lachaux. "The '96s offer good color, fruit and tannins: near-perfect balance." Following the '96 harvest, Lachaux did a full nine or ten days of cold maceration prior to the onset of fermentation, then more pigeage than in previous years. The '96s then spent a bit longer on their lees than the '95s did owing to later malos: the first racking generally took place in June, vs. March and April for the earlier vintage. The combination of healthy grape sugars (generally a bit higher than those of '95) and good texture should result in a lush, satisfying set of wines.
