The 2011 Cabernets have held up well. These wines often see relatively long time in barrel by Napa Valley standards. In 2011, the decision to bottle on the earlier side paid off nicely.

This is another absolutely stellar set of new releases from Dana Estates. I have followed the 2011s since the beginning. The wines are just as impressive from bottle as they were from barrel. Winemaker Cameron Vawter commented that botrytis was more pronounced on the valley floor than in hillside sites. Vawter opted for lower temperatures than normal in fermentation and gentler extractions. The main concerns were oxidation and stabilization of color, so the wines saw no aeration during fermentation. Both the Lotus and Hershey spent a little less time in barrel than is typically the case. The 2012s, which I tasted from approximate final blends, look terrific at this stage. Everything at Dana Estates represents the search for the very best. The team led by the Lee family, General Manager Pete Perry, Vawter and consulting winemaker Philippe Melka have done a fabulous job. For more, readers may wish to watch this short video with Cameron Vawter from May 2013.

"Two thousand eleven was the first year we had 30 people on the sorting line," said winemaker Cameron Vawter. "It was also the first year that we picked on this estate into November." Dana did a shorter cold soak than usual in some cuvees but the total time on the skins was roughly as long as usual, with the temperature of fermentation a bit cooler and the extraction "a bit less aggressive." The Helms and Hershey wines were partly fermented in barrel but not the Lotus, which actually spent a long 43 days on its skins, longer than normal, as it had more extraction potential. Vawter admitted that in some earlier vintages Lotus used to be "overpowerful due to too-small yields," but the young 2011 looks to be the pick of the litter here.

It's hard to know where to start with these magnificent wines from Dana Estates. The 2010s are epic, while the 2011s continue to show all the promise I sensed when I first tasted the wines this spring. The 2010s were brought in between October 6-20, while the 2011 harvest didn't even start until October 22, only to finish on November 3! Napa Valley has attracted a lot of wealthy, big-time investors over the years, but few, if any, have managed to accomplish as much as Hi Sang Lee and his team have in such a short period of time. Readers who want to learn more about Dana Estates might enjoy taking a look at my video interview with winemaker Cameron Vawter.
