This year's tasting at Corliss included a ten-vintage vertical of both the Red Wine (a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and varying amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot) and estate Cabernet Sauvignon ( always 100% Cabernet). The Corliss style is one of refined power. Since 2016, the wines have been made entirely from estate fruit. The portfolio is focused mainly on Red Mountain fruit, except for the Blackrock Vineyard on the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley. Working through the wines, it was easy to see the progression and marked improvement Corliss has made, moving away from a style of extreme ripeness and longer aging in oak. That said, the older vintages were still a pleasure to taste. Today’s regiment includes about 55-65% new French oak for the Red Wine and 70-75% for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Typically, the wines are matured for 28 months in barrel but then held in bottle much longer than normal prior to release. The idea is to provide collectors with a wine that is closer to maturity. These wines mature at a glacial pace, as can be seen from the vertical tasting notes. The 2018s are the current release.
