Detert is, in my view, an estate with tremendous latent potential. Tom Garrett has made terrific wines here for some time, and yet my impression has long been that these wines aren't as great as they could be. Admittedly, that is a high bar, but then again, that is the potential of this site, which could probably be classified as part of the famed To Kalon. A new winery will give Garrett far more flexibility and control than he has enjoyed in the past, when the wines were made in a custom crush facility, while newly redeveloped vineyards using clonal material from his cousins at MacDonald should provide even better raw materials. I will not be surprised if these wines make a significant jump in quality in the next few years.
