The Eyrie Vineyards
Jason Lett has taken the reins at this historic winery from his father, the redoubtable David Lett, who planted the first vinifera vines in the Willamette Valley back in 1965, and his 2005 is an impressive debut. While David Lett's wines were famous-or notorious-for being uncompromising, structured and in need of extended cellaring, this year's pinot offers enormous immediate appeal. There is room for the wine to age, but I was struck by the vivacity that it already displays. Those who have found Eyrie's pinot inscrutable should try the '05. Lett, who has spent time in Burgundy and New Zealand, gave the 2005 fruit a three-day cold soak; vinified at cool temperature, using more wild yeasts than in the past here; and did not bottle the wine until October of 2007. He also began with a smaller-than-usual crop.
