Neil Ellis

Neil Ellis is one of a handful of South African producers who make world-class red and white wines. He uses labor-intensive methods in his modern facility in the Jonkershoek Valley, just east of the town of Stellenbosch. Production here is split virtually 50/50 between reds and whites. During my tasting with Ellis, we discussed the recent rapid increase in wine production in South Africa. Our only chance is from the quality end; it's not in our genes to play a volume game," Ellis told me. Really, we should be making half as much wine in South Africa as we are today; there are a lot of bad sites. Along the Orange River, we should be growing food for Africa, rather than contributing to the problem by growing grapes instead." According to Ellis, 70% of his production comes from fruit under his control, and of that portion, 60% is from vines he owns. (Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL)
