Domaine de Longue Toque

Domaine de Longue Toque could be referred to as Gabrielle Meffre’s luxury label. The domaine was established with the 1999 vintage with the goal to produce limited quantities of wines that could stand toe-to-toe with the best examples of the appellation. There are four bottlings of Gigondas made here, all sourced from high-altitude, old estate vines that give very low yields. The “basic” bottling can be up to a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, while the single-site wines are virtually all Grenache. Winemaking is done in a separate cellar from the Meffre label, but the site is just across a tiny side street that’s not much wider than an alley. Whole clusters are in play, in varying percentages, given the vintage. New oak is present for the basic bottling. For the single-plot wines, casks have been used at least once, and a number of the large casks are neutral. Production is painfully tiny for the single-site wines, around 150 to 175 cases of each bottling per vintage. These are modern wines in the best sense: clean and polished, with strong, concentrated and mineral-driven fruit, noteworthy floral intensity and marked spiciness. But they aren’t “international” in style, as they used to say. The wines should age wonderfully.
