Emmanuel Cruse and his team escorted me through the portfolio of wines under the ownership of Jacky Laronzetti, who acquired Lafon-Rochet a couple of years ago to add to d’Issan, Pédesclaux and Lilian Ladouys. “We had a bit more rain in Margaux, so the mildew pressure was higher. There was a big storm in August that meant vines in the northern Médoc could gain more energy from this water. Strangely, the vines close to the river were affected more by the June storms [as the storms followed a path close to the estuary]. To combat mildew, we had to be very reactive all the time, including the weekends. We’re finding that mildew is building a resistance to those products. It was one of the longest harvests, a week’s difference between the northern and southern parcels. It was an easy extraction, and color was extracted just a day after maceration began.”
