The Vineyard 29 2018s are every bit as impressive as they were from barrel. In recent years winemaker Keith Emerson has started picking a bit earlier, which yields wines that are quite a bit more precise, nuanced and delineated than in the past. Richness comes naturally in this northern sector of St. Helena. The current approach balances that exuberance, as opposed to pushing it to the extreme with huge extractions and copious new oak, as was the case in the past. The result? Striking, complete wines that dazzle from top to bottom. This year I tasted a few more wines than usual, most of them small production lots typically destined to the mailing list. My feeling is that Vineyard 29 is just getting started. The sky’s the limit.

Proprietor Chuck McMinn and winemaker Keith Emerson are in the midst of a slight stylistic evolution at Vineyard 29. The wines now have a bit more freshness and energy than in the past, yet still retain the textural richness that the estate’s fans have come to expect. This transition is hard to see with the 2017 reds because the conditions of the year pulled the wines in the opposite direction but is quite evident in the 2018s. I found the young 2018s captivating and alluring.
