Alexandre Thienpont made a very severe 55% selection for the 2001 grand vin, eliminating virtually all of the estate's young-vines cabernet and merlot. He then vinified "for fruit," doing a shorter cuvaison, with gentler and shorter pumpovers. He did the malolactic fermentation in oak for the 2001 merlot, whereas in 2000 he allowed the secondary fermentation to occur in cuve before the fining. Thienpont describes the young 2001, which he believes is "further along in quality" than the 2000 was at the same stage, as "very right bank. It's more Pomerol in style than the 2000, which is a bit more dominated by its cabernet component."

"Two thousand was the first good cabernet franc vintage since 1996," said Alexandre Thienpont in early March, "although the younger franc vines were affected by hydric stress. The new vintage is like a denser version of the '96, as the merlot was riper in 2000. We vinified as simply as possible, with no saignee, no intervention. The vintage was 90% made in the vines. The tannins are wonderfully fine but substantial, and 2000 should be a classic vin de garde."

Alexandre Thienpont describes '99 as a merlot year, like '98 and '97, with a bit of the tropical character of '97. "But it's a vintage of fruit, not of tannin, as was the '98. There was not the same matiere primaire in '99 to do a long cuvaison," he added. "Many estates that overworked their material during vinification have made dry, rude wines. It was necessary to preserve the fruit in '99." Crop levels were a bit higher in '99 than in the previous year (38 hectoliters per hectare, versus 34), though still quite low by the standards of the appellation, but potential alcohol was higher and no chaptalization was necessary.
