My recent tasting at Vine Hill Ranch was incredibly instructive, as it spanned three very different and distinct vintages. Revisiting the 2021s was a reminder of how gorgeous those wines are. In recent years, VHR has experimented with an Extended Age bottling. While that wine is quite interesting, in 2021, I slightly prefer the regular bottling because of its greater freshness. The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon turned out well. Harvest took place from August 30 to September 5. Judging by the wine's tannin profile, I suspect that was a touch earlier than would have otherwise been optimal, but these are the kinds of decisions owners and winemakers had to make in 2022. The young 2023, tasted from barrel, is quite simply one of the most refined, finessed wines I have ever tasted here. Kudos to proprietors Bruce and Heather Phillips, and their team led by vineyard manager Mike Wolf, winemaker Françoise Peschon and her daughter Isabelle, the latest addition to the team.

My tasting at Vine Hill Ranch was one of the highlights of the time I spent in Napa Valley this fall. The wines were just sublime. Longtime winemaker Françoise Peschon crafts one of the most classically elegant Cabernets in Napa Valley, as evidenced by her superb 2021. I find the VHR Cabernet really needs a few years in the cellar to be at its very best. Recent bottles of the 2016 and 2018 were just extraordinary. Yields are down about 20% in 2021, but that is not terrible given the fate other properties suffered. I was even more impressed with the 2022 given the challenges of the year. Harvest took place between August 30 and September 5, an especially condensed period. A lot can happen between now and when a wine is bottle, but the 2022 is shaping up to be one of my favorites in this vintage.

I can’t think of too many other wines that so clearly articulate the differences between the 2020 and 2021 vintages than the VHR Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020, made from an historically early harvest, is about as good as it gets for this very challenging vintage, while the 2021 has all the makings of a truly epic wine. As always, I am struck by the passion and conviction behind VHR driven by proprietors Bruce and Heather Phillips, along with vineyard manager Mike Wolf and winemaker Françoise Peschon.

My fall trip to Napa Valley concluded with a complete vertical of the VHR Cabernet Sauvignon that I will be writing up soon. In the meantime, I can say that the 2019 sits comfortably among the finest vintages made here so far. Proprietors Bruce and Heather Phillips have put together an all-star team led by Winemaker Françoise Peschon and Vineyard Manager extraordinaire Mike Wolf. The result is one of the benchmark Cabernets in Napa Valley today, a wine that melds together expression of site, Napa Valley richness and tons of energy.

VHR was another highlight of my tastings. It is amazing to consider what the Philipps family has achieved in just a decade of making their own Cabernet Sauvignon. The focus on VHR remains on a single Cabernet, but this year I also tasted an extended barrel version of the 2018 that was superb. What I find most remarkable is the extraordinary quality and consistency of these wines. The 2018 has come together beautifully since I first saw it, gaining body and complexity with each successive tasting, while the 2019 is incredibly promising. I have said it before, but it bears repeating. The lots VHR chooses not to bottle could easily be the top wine at many other properties. That pretty much says it all. These are three gorgeous wines from the Philipps family and their team, headed by vineyard manager Mike Wolf and winemaker Françoise Peschon.

The 2017 from Vine Hill Ranch is an attractive wine, but like so many 2017s it is on the lighter side, most likely because the Labor Day heat spikes caused the vines to shut down and blocked ripening. I also tasted the 2018 from a selection of components and a preliminary blend. That wine is shaping up to be terrific.

These are two magnificent wines from VHR. Proprietors Bruce and Heather Phillips, along with their team led by winemaker Françoise Peschon and vineyard manager Mike Wolf, are making some of the most compelling wines in Napa Valley. The 2016 is a majestic, regal wine that captures the essence of this great Napa Valley vintage. I was perhaps even more impressed with the 2017, which is one of my favorite wines of the vintage so far. As it turns out, I happened to visit the Vine Hill Ranch on the last day of harvest for the estate wine, September 23 (some clients picked later), and tasted the separate lots in fermentation then this past spring and fall. The 2017 here has never been anything less than showy in the very best sense of the word. These days, VHR is at the top of the pack in Napa Valley. And, I have written here before, the wines VHR makes but that do not make it into their final blend, are better than those wines other properties do bottle!

Proprietors Bruce and Heather Phillips, along with the team headed by viticulturist Mike Wolf and winemaker Françoise Peschon are making world-class wine at Vine Hill Ranch. The most impressive thing about Vine Hill Ranch is not the 2015 nor the 2016, but the lots I tasted on my most recent visit that have been excluded from the 2016 blend. The unused lots, some of which are better than the 2016s at many other estates, show the total commitment to quality that is at the heart of Vine Hill Ranch. I can still remember tasting the debut 2008 years ago. That wine was compelling. Since then, Vine Hill Ranch has gone on to even greater heights. Readers should do whatever they can to taste these magical Cabernets.

These are two stellar wines from Bruce and Heather Phillips. What else is new? Since the 2008 vintage, the Phillipses have made one of the most distinctive Napa Valley wines from their Vine Hill Ranch. Winemaker Françoise Peschon and viticulturist Mike Wolff round out the all star team at this jewel of property in southern Oakville.

Vine Hill Ranch is on a roll. Owners Bruce and Heather Phillips have put together an all star team consisting of vineyard manager Mike Wolf and winemaker Françoise Peschon, both of whom know how to get the best out of this site on the southern edge of Oakville. Most of the fruit off the ranch still goes to long-term buyers, but over the years, the Philippses have gradually increased production of their own wine to about 750 cases. Vine Hill Ranch, with its classically-leaning profile, is one of the most distinctive wines in Napa Valley.

These are two gorgeous Cabernets from Vine Hill Ranch, which continues to cement its place in Napa Valley's top echelon. The Phillips family, along with vineyard guru Mike Wolf and winemaker Françoise Peschon, make a formidable team. The Vine Hill Ranch Cabernets are distinguished by great balance, mid-weight structure and tremendous energy. As good as the wines can be in open vintages such as 2009 or 2012, the Vine Hill Ranch Cabernets need at least a few years in bottle to blossom and give every impression of being age worthy. Stylistically, the wines are perhaps just a touch more restrained than the wines Peschon made at Araujo Estate. Classicists take note; Vine Hill Ranch is one of the very best and most pedigreed wines in Napa Valley.

Since 1959, Bob and Alex Phillips have quietly sold the fruit from their well-situated Oakville vineyard just to the west of Highway 29 to several top producers around the valley, including the likes of Lail, Etude and Bond (Vecina comes from Vine Hill Ranch), with each client working with the same block of vines each year. The estate is now managed by Bruce Phillips and his wife Heather, who decided to bottle a limited quantity of wine under their own label as of the 2008 vintage, drawing from their eight distinct blocks and using about 75% new oak.Francoise Peschon, winemaker for Araujo Estate from 1993 through 2008, has directed winemaking at Vine Hill Ranch from 2008.As I reported last year, the 2010 here was a knockout and the young 2012 promises to be at the same high level.

Bruce and Heather Phillips own one of the great sites in Napa Valley. Most of the fruit is still sold to other wineries, just as it has been for decades, but over the last few years, the Vine Hill Ranch Cabernets have carved out a nice all their own. I have tasted the estate's 2011 in components, blends and now in bottle. The wines have never been anything less than stellar. Vineyard manager Mike Wolff did not want to take the risk of exposing the fruit too much, just in case heat spikes appeared late in the season as they did in 2010. Winemaker Francoise Peschon opted for a quick fermentation by her standards, with no cold soak and less time on the skins than normal. The 2011 was bottled a month earlier than is typically the case. I also tasted three tanks of 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, each corresponding to a specific block, all of which were striking.

I tasted the 2011 as part of a complete vertical in October 2021. That tasting provided a great opportunity to place the 2011 within the context of the surrounding vintages, all of them considered far more important. In the end, the pedigree of this Oakville site simply can’t be denied.

I can't say enough about the work the Phillips family has done with the first four vintages of Vine Hill Ranch. As readers may remember, the Phillips family has supplied some of the Napa Valley's finest estates with fruit for generations, but only began making their own wines with the 2008 vintage. An all-star team led by winemaker Françoise Peschon and viticulturist Mike Wolff look after every aspect of the wines with meticulous care. Although hardly a 'new'; property, Vine Hill Ranch gets my vote as the single most exciting emerging winery in Napa Valley.

Vine Hill Ranch is nestled between Harlan Estate and Dominus. Not bad for neighbors. The Phillips family has owned Vine Hill Ranch since 1959, but records show the land has been cultivated as far back as 1884. With their inaugural 2008 release, the Phillips family is making the move from grape growers to winemakers. The Vine Hill Ranch team includes vineyard manager Mike Wolf and winemaker Francoise Peschon. The three vintages I tasted were all super-impressive. This has to be one of the most exciting debuts in Napa Valley.

As the challenges of difficult growing seasons fade with time, two things happen. First, in the memory of winemakers, rain events magically become less extreme: the actual torrential rainfall that plagued a harvest shrinks to moderate precipitation and eventually to a vague recollection of moisture. Freakishly cool or brutally hot harvest weather or damaging hail storms are virtually forgotten, as the body has a short memory for pain. At the same time, as the wines themselves mature and are transformed, they reveal themselves to be less extreme after all, until at some point it can be next to impossible to find the insanity of the vintage in the bottle. I’ve seen these patterns play out again and again in temperate wine-growing areas like Bordeaux, Burgundy and northern Italy—and even in normally hot, bone-dry growing regions. Two thousand eight was such a year for California’s North Coast.
