The re-born Vecchie Terre di Montefili has really been on a roll since it was acquired by American investors a few years ago. These wines are off the charts beautiful. The Chianti Classico is superb, and it just gets better from there. Power, structure and intensity remain the signatures. There can be little doubt that Vecchie Terre is now one of the most exciting estates in all of Italy. The wines are every bit that special.

Vecchie Terre di Montefili is one of the most dynamic estates in Chianti Classico today. Winemaker Serena Gusmeri continues to do a remarkable job in coaxing so much character out of the sprawling, rugged vineyards located throughout the property. Readers should expect dense, powerful wines. Aging is done mostly in medium-size oak, but what stands out most is the extraordinary personality of each of these wines. I can’t say enough good things about what the new team lead by restaurateur Nicola Marzovilla has achieved here.

Completely reborn under its new ownership and the team led by winemaker Serena Gusmeri, this dramatic estate lies on the Panzano/San Casciano border. One of its key distinguishing features is elevation; these vineyards at 500 meters in altitude are superbly positioned, especially for today’s changing climate. The wines are rich and quite powerful, but also marked by bright acids. For example, the 2017s are remarkably fresh considering the torrid, dry season. Most of the focus at Montefili is on the 12.5 acres of vineyards. The cellar is best described as tiny, cramped and functional, at best, especially for wines with this level of ambition. That will change, now that work on a new facility will soon go ahead. The wines are fermented in small stainless-steel tanks with ambient yeasts, while aging takes place mostly in medium-sized casks. These are some of the most distinctive Chianti Classicos readers will come across.

I have long believed that Vecchie Terre di Montefili is one of the great under the radar estates in Italy. Unfortunately, the previous owners faced daunting personal challenges that made it impossible to focus on wine. In 2016, a new ownership team headed by restaurateur Nicola Marzovilla took over. It is too soon to know where things will go, but if these new releases are any indication, the future is very bright. Stylistically, these are powerful, structured wines that need time in the glass or in bottle to be at their most expressive.

Vecchie Terre di Montefili is one of the jewels of Chianti Classico. The estate has been through ups and downs over the last few years but has recently been bought by a group headed by New York restaurateur Nicola Marzovilla who runs the well-known and admired I Trulli. It will be interesting to see how things develop here under the new ownership. There is plenty of untapped potential, that much is abundantly clear.

For years, Vecchie Terre di Montefili has been one of the most intriguing estates in Chianti Classico. Located in the hills outside the center of Panzano, Vecchie Terre excels with unique, powerful wines built on structure and intensity. Several sources told me the estate had recently been sold. If that turns out to be true it will be interesting to see what the new owners do here, as I believe there is quite a bit of potential that remains untapped.

The Anfiteatro Super-Tuscan, first made back in 1983, is actually the house Chianti Riserva, owner Roccaldo Acuti told me. "In reality, we never stopped making our Riserva," he explained. "But I decided to call it by another name as there were too many Riserva wines being made then that weren't any good. Besides, the market at the time wanted something different." Located on the outskirts of Greve in the Classico zone, not far from Panzano, this estate has fast-draining soils and superb sangiovese vines that have been carefully selected by Acuti over the years. "Back in the early '80s I saw a small vineyard that still had some grapes on it that were great to eat at Christmas-time, which amazed me," said Acuti. "I found out who the owner was and I bought the vineyard outright-this is what I mean when I say that the single most important secret to making great sangiovese here is the selection of the vines. Like it or not, it's just like with pinot noir: totally impossible to make great wine with lesser sub-varieties such as those from Emilia-Romagna or from inappropriate terroirs
