Vincenzo Abbruzzese crafts some of the most powerful, intense Brunellos readers will come across. The wines always show remarkable depth, even as new wines fresh from tank. With aging, always done in cask, the wines pick up distinctly ferrous, earthy and savory notes. My preference is to drink these wines around age 10-15, as after that the track record for aging is variable. That is not to say the wines don't hold up, they do. But they don't necessarily improve beyond a certain point. Valdicava is another example where wines from my cellar were in better shape than the wines I tasted at the winery.

Vincenzo Abbruzzese is one of the most outspoken, passionate growers in Montalcino. His beautifully tended vineyards yield some of the richest wines in the region; and that's where most of the focus is – on the vineyards. The winery itself is remarkable bare-bones with just the bare essentials. All of the wines are aged in large, neutral oak; what comes through is Abbruzzese's commitment to low yields, sustainable farming and non-interventionalist winemaking. Unfortunately I was not able to taste the 2008 Rosso in bottle, but several samples tasted from tank and barrel seemed quite promising.
