These are the finest wines I have tasted from Nicola and Stefania Oberto. The 2019s are marked by a gorgeous feeling of transparency that has at times been elusive. Gentler winemaking and an increasing reliance on large-format oak are among the choices that inform these Barolos today. With young estates, quality is often driven more by work and progress over time rather than by the conditions of any given vintage. That is very much the case here. Readers will note the straight Barolo is now labeled Berri, the result of the winery losing its lease in Capalot and the devastating frost that wiped out virtually the entire crop at Torriglione.
