Torbreck Vintners, an already iconic winery, was only established in 1994. Under the direction of David Powell it quickly rose to the upper level of all Australian producers, a position that it maintains, and deserves, to this day. Since 2017, the winemaking duties are conducted by Ian Hongell, a Barossa veteran who was previously chief winemaker at Peter Lehmann, the winery he joined in 1998. The style here has been impressively consistent over the years, favoring richness but with good structure and a distinct core of energy. At the entry level, these 2018s and 2017s deliver impressive value, and the current set of upper-tier releases were among the standouts of my recent tastings.
