Talbott is undergoing a revolution. Kamee Knutson took over as senior winemaker in 2022, a move that is displayed in the increased quality of what’s in the glass. Along with assistant winemaker Benjamin Hernández, Knutson injected a shot of youthful experimentation into the approach here that has breathed new life into these wines. Arguably better than ever, the Chardonnays and Pinots are more reflective of both careful handling and site-oriented winemaking. With the support of the Gallo brand behind the team, the winery facility at Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in the SLH is loaded with the latest equipment—myriad fermentation vessels of all shapes and sizes, high-quality cooperage, pneumatic punch-down devices, you name it. Even with all that at her disposal, Knutson crafts wines that respect and elevate tradition without fear of change. The successful 2022s are just the beginning. Talbott is on the move—I can’t wait to taste these wines as the approach is honed even further.

If any winery can claim to be a pioneer of Monterey County, it’s Talbott, which was established in 1982, in Carmel. Seemingly overnight, Talbott set a new standard for California, indeed, American Chardonnay. Talbott’s impact on the world’s view of the variety from the Golden State was altered, unlike anything seen since Chalone Vineyards arrived on the scene in 1972. The Sleepy Hollow estate vineyard, which was originally planted in 1972, now sprawls across 565 acres and has always been the source for most of the winery’s fruit. Now owned by the Gallo family (since 2015) quality at Talbott continues at an admirably high level, even if the competition has become fiercer. Recent years’ bottlings, under the direction of head winemaker David Coventry, have been the best wines ever made here, especially when it comes to Pinot Noir. I found these 2019s to be outstanding, across the board. The Kali Hart Chardonnay and Pinot Noir must be counted among America’s greatest values for their respective varieties, and they are even more impressive when one considers how much is made.

Back in the mid-1980s this iconic, pioneering producer was the first Monterey winery to produce Chardonnays that could challenge California’s North Coast versions, at the time, dominant in the marketplace. Pinot would soon follow and, again, Talbott proved that there was life for the variety outside of Sonoma. Under the watch of winemaker Dan Karlsen, quality was reliably steady, with flashes of brilliance, over the proceeding decades. These wines, made by newly appointed winemaker and Monterey homeboy David Coventry (Chalone, Morgan, Puma Road), look to be some of the best and most elegant Talbott offerings in many years.

There has been a distinct (and welcome to my taste) turn toward elegance and a fresher less ripe expression of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at Talbott in the last few vintages. The wines continue to lead with fruit and exhibit forward personalities but the richness has been toned down making the wines much more adaptable at the table. The 2016 vintage is winemaker David Coventry’s first at Talbott but the Monterey native has extensive experience in the region beginning in 1997 at Chalone and including a stint as winemaker at Morgan.

One of the region’s iconic wineries, Talbott is the proud owner of the iconic 550 acre Sleepy Hollow vineyard, which was first planted by founder Robert Talbott back in 1982. Over the years the style has remained fairly constant and the 2015s clearly show the estate’s trademark opulence and fruit-forward character. The Kali Hart bottlings deliver outstanding value and, better still, they are widely available.

One of the pioneering wineries in the region, Talbott’s first vines were planted in 1982 at the Diamond T Vineyard. By the end of the ‘80s the Talbott wines were already on most wine lovers’ short lists of top California Chardonnays. The vineyards are planted heavily to California heirloom clones, the 14-acre Diamond T to Mount Eden and the 565-acre Sleepy Hollow featuring many blocks of Wente that date back to 1972. While that may not sound especially revolutionary now, it wasn’t the norm during this winery’s ascent, when Dijon clones were all the rage. For Pinot Noir, Talbott relies on the traditional Pommard clone as well as Dijon clones that were isolated specifically for cool, even cold conditions like those of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Winemaker Dan Karlsen has a long track record in the California wine industry, including stints at Dehlinger and Domaine Carneros and a decade as winemaker at Chalone before joining Talbott in 2007.
