Giampaolo Tabarrini is the young man in charge of this estate, which is still very much a family operation, with father, mother, uncle and wife all involved at harvest time. Giampaolo is a fan of the ultra-small cobra clone, which gives a more tannic style of sagrantino. Indeed, his examples tend to be extremely tannic-maybe overly so-in their youth. I feel he has a real touch with the sweet passito, and his is the best example of trebbiano spoletino, a white wine made with an almost extinct local variety. Also recommended: 2007 Il Padrone delle Vigne Umbria Rosso (85), 2003 Colle alle Macchie Sagrantino di Montefalco (86).
