These new releases from Shafer have turned out as well as I had hoped. Although the flagship Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon gets most of the attention, I am increasingly impressed with both the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five, as both wines deliver superb quality for what are very modest price tags in the context of present day Napa Valley. Unfortunately, I was not able to taste any wines from barrel on this visit, as the wines had been sulfured too close to my tasting. Doug Shafer and winemaker Elias Fernandez continue to manage what is surely one of the most successful partnerships in Napa Valley.

Shafer is one of Napa Valley's best oiled machines. Year after year the wines deliver the goods in a rich, sumptuous style that defines the very essence of contemporary Napa Valley at its very best. The 2012s are terrific, but Shafer really shines in 2013 and 2014, two vintages in which the wines have a bit more energy and delineation than 2012, a year with mostly mid-weight wines built on forward fruit, but with less varietal character. Winemaker Elias Fernandez describes 2013 as a year with a generous crop. Unlike the vast majority of his colleagues, Fernandez opted for shorter macerations in 2014, a year with smaller berries and wines that extracted more quickly than in 2013, when the wines spent longer on the skins. Quite frankly, it's hard to go wrong with any of these wines, including the just-released 2011 Hillside Select, which is gorgeous.

Shafer remains a reference-point winery for Napa Valley. In a region where key people come and go every few years, Shafer has succeeded in creating an environment that fosters long-term loyalty. Winemaker Elias Fernandez arrived at Shafer straight out of Davis 30 years ago and worked his way up to the top, allowing Doug Shafer to concentrate on building the business. That partnership has paid big-time dividends for years and is one of the best examples of how important long-term organizational stability is in achieving a consistently high level of performance. As for the wines, they are terrific across the board.
