Andreas and Kilian Schmitges picked from late September 2017 through the third week of October. A small crop due to the April frost as well as the necessary selectivity at harvest has resulted in wines emphasizing the palpable density and prominent ripeness that are already part of the Schmitges style. Scrupulous elimination of botrytis permitted pre-fermentative skin contact for as long as a day or more in the dry wines, which served to buffer vintage-typical acidity in any lots that did not undergo malolactic transformation (though that takes place regularly in dry wines at this address). The most successful sweet wines here this vintage harness and showcase precisely that acidity. (For more about this estate, consult in particular the introductions to my reviews of its 2014s and 2016s.)
