Although Christian Witte has done an excellent job improving the quality of this estate's dry rieslings in the three years that he has been at the helm, I was unprepared for this year's showstopper: the 2006 Erstes Gewachs is the finest wine of its kind that I have ever tasted here. Given the large selection of old wines maturing in the vast, vaulted "bibliotheca subterranea" here, that is a bold statement. Add to that the difficulty that most estates had with the 2006 vintage, and this collection is all the more to be admired. (Valckenberg International, Tulsa, OK) Also recommended: 2006 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Kabinett Trocken (86), 2006 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Feinherb (86), 2006 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Beerenauslese (90).
