I was taken with these two wines from Scarecrow. Celia Welch is the perfect winemaker for Scarecrow and this site is the perfect match for Welch, as their qualities and attributes are so well suited to each other. Welch has crafted striking, bold wines that will thrill fans of this historic Rutherford property. In particular, I was especially struck by the beauty of the M. Etain this year.

Scarecrow remains one of the most distinctive properties in Napa Valley. Sadly, the historic residence where the proprietor spent periods of his childhood sustained major damage during the August 2014 earthquake. Fortunately, the vineyards appear to have escaped with no visible damage. Winemaker Celia Welch seems to coax all of the distinctiveness from this Rutherford site in making wines of true pedigree. As always, the flagship Scarecrow includes about 20% fruit from the remaining head-trained vines on the property. This year, I was able to taste the wine from that part of the vineyard alone, and all I can say is that it was truly spectacular.
