In 2012, Sandhi's Pinots are more interesting and complex of the Chardonnays, which goes counter to the trend at most other wineries. I am not sure why that is; perhaps it is simply a reflection of the relative pedigree of sites, or maybe yields were better managed in the Pinots, but the 2012 Pinots bristle with energy and class, while the 2012 Chardonnays lack some of their customary verve. The 2012 Pinots spent about 14 days on the skins and saw just 2-3 punch downs in total during that time. The Sant Rita Hills Pinot was bottled just before the 2013 harvest, while the vineyard designates spent a few months in steel before being bottled in January. The Chardonnays spent eleven months in barrel, followed by another six months in tank. All of the Chardonnays show light elements of Burgundian-like reduction, so they need plenty of air if opened young. Overall, this is a very pretty set of new releases from winemakers Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman.
