SAMsARA is one of the hidden jewels of the Sta. Rita Hills. Although Chad Melville's family winery is quite established, Melville prefers to make his wines in a tiny warehouse in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. The SAMsARA reds generally see a fair amount of whole clusters along with lengthy cold soaks. Fermentations are spontaneous and the wines spend longer in barrel than is the norm in the area. Minimal racking, an emphasis on neutral oak and a generally minimalist aesthetic informs wines of class and pedigree.

Chad Melville seems to be outgrowing his tiny facility in Lompoc's wine ghetto but he insisted to me that "it still works just fine" and that he wants to keep things "tight and manageable" given his added responsibilities with the family winery. He told me that his current obsession is "not letting fermentation temperatures go too high," thereby extending the process and building complexity into the wines as well as maintaining freshness. Melville explained: "Complexity is the ultimate goal because anybody in California can do fruit--the job is to move past that."
