Ravines is one of the better known and most highly regarded names in the Finger Lakes. It was started by Morten Hallgren, a Dane who was raised on a wine estate in Provence, in 2000. Hallgren attended winemaking school at Montpellier, and spent several years making wine in all corners of the world, including Texas. He was brought to the Finger Lakes to head winemaking at Dr. Frank, where he remained for 6 years. During this time, he and his wife Lisa purchased and developed the famous Argetsinger vineyard, which is one of the few vineyards to feature a good amount of limestone. For many years, Hallgren produced his wines in shared spaces all over the Finger Lakes, but in 2010 he moved operations to the sizable White Springs Winery, which he then purchased in 2012. This initiated a rather dramatic expansion, and in the last half a decade, Ravines’ production has swelled to over 20,000 cases, 40 – 45% of which is Riesling. The Hallgrens have no intention of stopping there, with, and plan to continue growing significantly.

Stylistically speaking, Ravines’ wines are some of the ripest and most polished in the Finger Lakes. The winemaking is at a very high level, and the wines are as consistent as possible in such a marginal climate. The star of the portfolio is undeniably the Argetsinger Riesling, which is made in both still and sparkling forms. This wine possesses incredible personality and vitality and has set a high water mark for Riesling within the region.
