Promontory offers their wines a bit later than most estates, so these are the current releases. Winemaker David Cilli gave his 2021 15-23 days on the skins, depending on the specific lots. Wines were settled naturally and then moved into cask over the winter, where they spent two and a half years. Sound familiar? That's an approach to élevage that borrows heavily from the traditionally made wines of Piedmont. Not surprisingly, Promontory is distinguished within the context of Napa Valley for its energy, tension and generally linear build. I also had a chance to revisit the 2020, a wine that showed much better than it did a year ago.

This is an intriguing set of wines from Promontory. David Cilli is one of the most talented winemakers in Napa Valley. His 2019 is once again ravishing, while the 2020 shows just how little he had to work with in this very challenging vintage. I also had an opportunity to taste the two most recent vintages of Penultimate, the more accessible of the two wines off this stunning property in the Mayacamas Mountains.
